Our farm was established in 1909 by the man smiling and waving his hat in the picture above. His name was Victor Hugo Dunton. Others in the photograph are two of his four children, John and Mildred. A cousin, Alfred Butterfield, is riding on the implement at the back of the tractor.
We don't know much about the photograph. Photographs in our family seem to be quite rare. It was taken about 1916 in what appears to be the spring. As far as we can tell, the tractor is a 1910, Avery 5-10.
What this photo does represent is that although we hold on to old-fashioned values - like a strong family and hard work - we are early adopters of technology. Additionally, this photo is documentary evidence of our family farming in this community of
Liberal, Oregon for six generations.
You can read more about this tractor's specifications in the book, "The Modern Gas Tractor: Its Construction, Utility, Operation and Repair," 1917.
