Spring 2005
Greenhouse Installation / "Kitchen Garden" Renovation

Because of the uncertainty of the highway expansion project, and because we have been concentrating growing efforts out in the fields, our old kitchen garden has been very neglected.

Some impetus for getting it back in a state of productivity, include knowledge of the impact of the highway project, the need for new greenhouse space, and additional ground for trials that has isolation from other growing areas.

2/16/05 - "Greenhouse" arrives.

2/16/05 - Neglected kitchen garden area.

4/4/05 - Area after several hours of cleanup.  Removing old, rotted beds, mowing, removing and leveling soil, etc. 4/7/05 - Thinned the tangled mess of filbert trees in the background. Long poles were saved for future service as bean poles.
4/25/05 - Asparagus bed relocated and remains of old beds leveled.  Preparing for new greenhouse. 4/25/05 - After filling up the bed in the picture on the left above, we still had leftover plants.  Made a new bed closer to the house.  It is in an area that is a bit more shaded.  Kind of an experiment.  We sure ate a mess of it out of here this year.  First year of production!

5/3/05 - Landscape cloth down and foundation base in rough location.

6/4/05 - Planting time has kept us busy for the last few weeks so nothing new to report on the new greenhouse.  Our main and hillside trial gardens filled up with tomatoes quickly so the kitchen garden has been put into service.

6/4/05 - Sorry for the blurry picture.  The sun was already gone and this was as good as the flash would do.  really busy day.  Dad and mom worked on landscaping.  Emily came home and while I tilled, John and her planted a patch of 'Stowell's Evergreen' corn and about 115 of the last tomato plants.

6/21/05 - 'Stowells's Evergreen' patch - tilled and hoed.

6/21/05 - Bean tee-pee.

6/24/05 - Corn, tomatoes, beans, squash, cucumbers and one variety ('Pizza') of sweet pepper planted.  Weeds are doing great too.  Two years of no attention really built up the weed seed bank in the soil.

6/25/05 - I had not planned on clearing, cleaning and tilling this area, but it was a mess and I was looking for a place to stick some more bean seeds. Nothing planted in here yet.  Will wait a few days and till again.  Good leafy greens location.  Root crops do well here too.
